    Unique Abilities:

Appearance: Mei is a short individual, standing at 5’2” (157 cm). She has slightly tousled, bob-length black hair with red undertones and highlights from the sun, grey eyes, and a heart shaped face. Mei is lithe, quick, and has toned muscle as opposed to bulk. She prefers to wear red and black clothing to emphasize her hair, and where possible, buys weapons that fit the color scheme. Her outfits often include a corset that laces up the front, black combat boots with red accents and a silver buckle, short skirts, and a red cape for dramatic flair. Despite being short enough to stand below eye level for many of her taller counterparts, Mei isn’t easy to miss. (Face claim: Ruby Rose, RWBY)

History: Mei Yoruhana’s origins are unclear. She has faint memories of her parents, but those memories are haunted by the nightmare that left her orphaned. Her father was one of the infamous ‘Cursed Ones’ that was lucky and skilled enough to control his abilities, or so he thought. What happened is lost to time, as the only surviving member of the incident was Mei, whose recollection of events is that of a traumatized child.

Her father lost control and her mother was able to escape with their lives, though not uninjured. Her mother, Kai Yoruhana, made it to the village of Konohagakure but died in the hospital due to her injuries and exhaustion, leaving Mei alone with nothing but a name and nightmares for memories.

With nowhere else to go, and unable to give authorities any useful information about possible surviving family members, Mei went to an orphanage. Her life there was difficult, for the girl fell into a listless state. She would scream and cry at night, waking up the other children, and spent her days sitting alone more often than not. Her unusual behavior did not lend itself towards making any close friends. At best, the other children tolerated her, at worst they bullied her.

Mei felt powerless and lost, having had everything dear to her ripped away at such a young age. One day, while sitting at the edge of a dock and staring into the waters, some children from the orphanage shoved her in. Mei knew how to swim, but instead of trying to get out of the water, she inhaled as much as she could. When the children realized that Mei hadn’t surfaced they ran away, afraid of what they had done.

Mei didn’t realize she’d inherited her father’s curse. Her young body didn’t hold much chakra, and couldn’t absorb much natural chakra either, but the stress of drowning was enough to unlock what little her small body contained. It overwhelmed her senses and by the time Mei regained consciousness, she was back in the hospital. She was told that she’d emerged from the water, startling some fishermen  and throwing up profusely before falling over.

Her survival and the subsequent medical exams revealed her condition. Knowing that she’d inherited this curse from her father was very distressing, but now those in charge of her kept a close eye on her, making further attempts on her life impossible for a child. Feeling trapped in a life that she didn’t even want, Mei decided to try and make the most of it. If escape was impossible, she might as well enjoy what she did have.

As such, Mei eventually got too old to stay at the orphanage and joined the Academy in hopes that being trained as a ninja would allow her to earn enough money to live comfortably, and maybe provide an opportunity to get at the sweet sweet release of death.

Personality: Mei is, in short, a hedonist and a thrill seeker. She lives for pleasurable experiences: good food and drink, nice clothes, hot baths, any sort of luxury she can blow her money on. She goes on missions, and then immediately spends it on useless things trying to make herself feel good. Despite this, her ability to enjoy these things is limited, only yielding temporary satisfaction. Some days, nothing seems to bring her joy.

As a Genin, her capacity to take on dangerous missions is limited, but every fight she does encounter makes Mei feel more alive than she does at any other time. The possibility of her life ending is terrifying, but it’s better than the overwhelming numbness she struggles with on a daily basis.

With few cares in the world except that she can find something to distract herself from her general dissatisfaction with being alive, Mei behaves in a carefree way a lot of the time. She tries so hard to live her life to the fullest, that the young woman comes across as very happy, almost unnaturally so. This is in stark contrast with how she acts when she can’t get past her generally dark disposition. There are still occasions where Mei will seem detached and lost, as if in a daze of some sort.
