Ashitaka grumbled to himself as he walked down the main market street holding a grocery list in his left hand and rubbing his cheek with his right. Old Lady Shizuka had grabbed him by it so hard that she actually lifted his feet off the ground. Stupid old ladies always going on about how "cute" he was and completely undermining his dignity as a ninja. That's why he usually tried to avoid them. Still, he wanted people to have a positive opinion of him, and for whatever bizarre reason, old ladies were the ones who people most expected you to be nice to, in spite of the awful way they treat everybody.
So, shopping he went. And he wouldn't let spite dictate his actions, so he resolved to get the best sample of whatever good he could get his hands on. This led to a lot of arguments with merchants trying to get him to pay more than the listed price even though he was able to hear them agree to take less from people who haggled. He didn't haggle and was taught to always respect adults, but more and more that seemed to let them think they could bully and take advantage of him at every opportunity. Usually though, threatening to leave without buying anything convinced them to at least sell their products at listed prices. It took all morning, but he eventually managed to buy everything that Mrs. Shizuka needed and haul it to her home. After at least half an hour of telling him all about her granddaughters around his age whom he had positively no interest in, she finally got around to stamping his mission card so he could go turn it in.
For the longest time, he was really worried that she was going to lock him in her house and try to boil him in a stew with everything he just bought for her.
