    Appearance:

Luna found herself with another assignment, however this one was something she could handle as it was a fairly common practice in the leaf village. Every month, or most often when it's right before being assigned a greater mission, Jounin would often get tasked with a training exercise between each other. It was to assure they were still in peak condition and qualified for the their duties. There was always a bit of excitement for Luna when it was time for her monthly exercise— beyond her standard routine —in hopes she would one day be thrown a curveball and would actually be activated for a task other than raising the next batch of Genin. Of course, the excitement enticed her more than the reality of being put in a mission. The fact was that Luna had grown quite comfortable with her life as a professional instructor than a field Jounin. Her skills were too valuable to lose in combat, therefore she often wasn't given risky assignments.

She moved at a walking pace through the village streets and eventually outside of the residential district where she found herself on a lone dirt road leading to Konoha's training fields. It wasn't often she encountered many civilians on this path, but the day was fair and the sky a clear blue. She had the privilege of walking past a group of joggers or a bicyclist, in which Luna would simply smile and nod while keeping her forward momentum.

Eventually the Jounin was just outside the entrance of training ground thirty-five, a more advanced training field compared to others. But all that really meant was a less maintained field and a much more remote area giving liberties for high-ranking Ninjutsu. This was popularly used by Chuunin and Jounin whose technique caused widespread damage, but although it was more forgiving, there were still limits in place. A maximum amount of devastation set at an area of five-hundred meters, something she didn't plan to even get close to destroying given the practical nature of the spar. Jounin did practice with Ninjutsu against each other and used ninja tools, but Jounin were also built different by having years of experience under their belt. Cuts and deep stabs were expected to be treated during the spar, and heavy damage dealt by Ninjutsu or Taijutsu tolerated until their threshold was met.

For such occasion, Luna came prepared with all of her gear. Fortunately for her, Luna's every day carry was an effective setup of tools, explosives, distractions, and simple medical supplies. They would get the job done. The dirt path dilapidated once entering the chain-linked fence as it was obvious appearances were not an upmost priority beyond that point. Although the path was sparse it was still manageable to find one's way to their training field. Eventually, Luna found her spot. A wide, fifty meter clearing in the thick of the woods granting plenty of natural light, and even had a fairly medium-sized river running through the setting, a few meters deep and several wide. It was an excellent source of natural spring water for Water Release Ninjutsu.

She was the first one she figured, so getting comfortable was her priority. Luna would nestle herself at the center not too far from the stream, finding comfort in the tall grass. Fortunately her outfit minimized direct contact with the blades of grass giving a not-so-itchy experience. Crossing her legs she used her arms to support herself as she reclined back and stared miserably at the sky. The sun wasn't nearly warm enough to enjoy, but she imagined she would think differently after she was done sweating.

    Pic & Rebirth:
Fumiko was jogging down the dirt path holding a paper in one hand and patting herself down with the other. To ensure that she had everything that she would need. Both of her hip pouches; one with shuriken and flash bombs, and the other with explosive tags and smoke bombs? Check. A holster with five of her kunai? Check. Then she knew her backpack contained one of her bo staffs, one Fuuma shuriken, and her trusty Rebirth. Fumiko was pretty sure that was everything she would need, she had checked three times before she left. The only thing she could have forgotten to grab was the medkit. Which, was a bit reckless, however too late now. She could not turn back and get it without being late to her destination.

Written on the paper was a summoning for standard monthly exercises for Jounin ranked ninja. It gave her the time and location of where she was to participate. However, already knowing the general area of where she needed to end up, Fumiko didn't both glance down at the sheet a whole lot. The young Jounin greeted and waved to those scarce few that hung around the path to the training grounds. To be honest, inside Fumiko was panicking, but on the outside, she wore the brightest smile. Especially when she passed someone. Let's just do our best today, she gave herself a bit of a pep-talk.

Thankfully it wasn't too long before the pink-haired kunoichi reached Training Grounds 35. The training grounds equipped for higher-ranked ninjas. Her blue eyes glanced down at the paper just to verify the location on paper matched her physical location. She felt anxious but tried not to show it - which was proving a bit more difficult now that she was just outside the training grounds awaiting to meet her opponent.

With a deep breath, Fumiko forced her body to move past the gate and actually into the training grounds. Once the first step was achieved, she pushed herself forward into a jog again looking for her opponent. For the training ground being large in size, it was surprisingly easier to navigate through than Fumiko originally thought. To be fair, she knew there was a river on this training ground and she was looking for it. Anywhere Fumi goes, she had access to at least one of her specialties. Unless she suddenly found herself upon metal or wooden features.

Unaware if she was the first Jounin to arrive or the last, Fumiko kept her wits about her, and slowed her pace down - she could not be certain if her opponent would come out and strike first to get things started or if they could at least introduce themselves first. Honestly, to trust a true ninja's skill, it was probably going to be the former rather than the latter.

The serenity provided by the undisturbed woods allowed Luna to tune in more with her surroundings than usual. And given her sharpened senses, as well as Fumiko's disregard of any stealth, it didn't take Luna long to notice the woman's feet shuffling through the tall grass as she kept a steady pace. The pinkette was just fifty or so meters away from Luna's own location, and given enough time on her path the woman would eventually meet up with her location. Luna took the advantage of knowing her training partner's arrival to briefly analyze her skillset. She looked the part of a Jounin, that was for sure. Her lightweight, free-flowing clothing suggested agility and speed over raw durability, but the subtle definition in her muscles as she moved let her know the woman wasn't exactly weak unlike herself, who was more pudding than meat. She carried a standard loadout around her waist much like any seasoned ninja, but an extravagant scabbard sized to fit a katana and even a backpack suggested more gear. Upon closer inspection it was made abundantly clear her sword was a signature weapon and not a disposable tool, much like the equipment Luna had access to.

Although Luna had just begun to scratch the surface of the woman's ability she was not someone she should underestimate. She needed to plan. Long range is likely my best option. Placing her palms on the ground she pushed so she was on both feet. Approaching Fumiko at a walking pace they would meet up just outside of the forest clearing, Luna casually flagging her down with a wave of her hand to catch her attention and partially work as a preamble to her greeting. "Hey there, you must be my training partner for today. Sorry if we've met before and I don't recall your name. I've been in this business for quite some time, and eventually you learn to not get attached so easy." Luna said, expressing a bit of dark humor which was a frequent bad habit of hers. "I'm Luna Yamamoto. You seem young, so I'll go over the standard procedure for this kind of drill. It's simple, really. We're using training ground thirty-five, so Ninjutsu can be used freely. Though keep in mind that we're still in village limits and surrounded by other training fields, so avoid devastating half a kilometer of terrain every other technique you wish to use."

"There's that, and then the 'no-kill' rule that should be obvious. The goal of this exercise is to get comfortable with exchanging attacks and stressing your body to its limits, not necessarily defeating your opponent. Although you should play like you're trying to bring me down, the real assignment is just warming up your body for whatever assignment is to come. But other than that, I don't have much else to say. Feel free to ask questions and whatnot during the training exercise." Bending at her knees Luna pushed herself back in a shallow leap to quickly clear ten meters between her and her opponent.

As she landed softly on the tall grass she kept her knees bent just slightly and her hands splayed, raised up to her mid abdomen. It was a stance that maximized her options, from reaching to her tool belt, creating hand seals in succession, or forming a quick guard in the event she needed a quick Taijutsu strike. When she moved back she kept a deadpan stare at her opponent. What looked like an intense degree of focus was actually calculations as her mind worked in processing the information her opponent gave. She was aware of her surroundings, noting any slight shift in the event Genjutsu was used to her body tensing up and preparing a lunge. Whatever action Fumiko decided to take in order to begin the spar, Luna would be prepared to react with the appropriate measures.

Fumiko spotted someone off in the nearby distance. Assuming it was her partner, Fumiko tucked the paper she carried into one of her hip pouches. Her hands reached up for the straps of the backpack that she was carrying and gave a good clench. Her training partner was a rather pretty jounin waving her down, the blue-haired woman appeared just a bit taller than Fumiko herself. She slowed to a stop as the two women came within a comfortable talking distance. Fumi kept her mouth shut, allowing for her partner to introduce themselves first. Internally, she found herself relieved that they were able to give each other an introduction before tossing one another around the forest.

Fumiko's lips pressed together when Luna stated a dark-humor comment. It was the truth in most cases, however, it was a pretty grim outlook on life. When Luna called Fumiko young, she nodded in agreement. Having turned twenty-three not too long ago, she was on the younger side of Jounins. Fumiko's blue eyes scanned Luna from head to toe and back during the momentarily brief conversation they shared. Once her elder Jounin finished wrapping up the rules for her and put some distance between the two, Fumi couldn't help but announce, "Nice to meet you, Yamamoto-chan, I'm Fumiko Arasaki. Let's both do our best!"

Fumiko mulled over if she should set her backpack down and out of the way, but that would hinder if she cared to use anything within. So she decided it was best if she kept it strapped to her back. Fumiko allowed herself to take in a deep breath, and clasp both her hands together. In an attempt to settle her nerves now that she knew who she was dealing with. Fumiko exhaled, letting her mind calm with all the jitters. "Time to begin..." she muttered to herself. Thankfully without the need for hand seals, the earth began to rumble between the two Jounin. An Earth shaped dragon emerging from the ground. "Earth Release: Earth and Stone Dragon!" Fumiko prepared herself for the chase, bending her knees down and spreading her feet apart to be ready to begin sprinting. Show me what you can do, Yamamoto-chan... Fumiko thought with a smile. Then with a small motion of her hand - the Earth dragon lunged at Luna.

With the confirmation of Fumiko's name Luna could rest assure she had found her way to the correct training field, and on time at that. Luna could only dream her Genin students had the same degree of punctuality, but overall that is what separated the kids from the grown ups, so the speak. It doesn't matter how strong you are or how strong you think you are, communication and punctuality are always king. Fumiko was short, sweet, and to the point. Deep down Luna wished the spritely young Jounin would've asked her more about her experiences turning this training into a lecture, but that was just her old bones being lazy. Goodness knows she needed to exercise more.

Something interesting Luna noticed was the girl opting to keep her backpack on. Initially she thought it was just a weapon or two, snacks, and other miscellaneous items that would be practical during an evening sport. Luna couldn't help but theorize if that bag served a greater purpose, carrying a variety of weapons for a personalized fighting style. She wouldn't put it out of question, as it was a Jounin's strength to be unorthodox.

Though no matter how much Luna analyzed, there was always the unexpected she needed to be aware of. Gestureless casting was something fairly uncommon, with only a couple personal encounters not including this one. When the earth began to tremble without any cue she had to act quickly. Earth release was on the menu, so Luna worked within her own strengths. The bluette instinctively moved to increase the path Fumiko's technique needed to negotiate before hitting her mark. Luna would spring back ten more meters just along the riverbank as Fumiko's construct of what was mostly stone at this point considering the advanced nature of the technique lunged towards her. It moved fast suggesting Fumiko had exceptional control over her spirit and mind. But despite its speed Luna outclassed it a fair bit to comfortably time her counter assault.

Her legs bent she sprung up and over the stone dragon taking an aerial approach over towards Fumiko. A brief series of three hand signs would be completed in the brief moment it took for her to step back and leap over the heap of rock which assaulted her. During her arced path she extended both arms forwards with her fingers pointed outwards. The natural daylight would dim as blueish white crackling charged from her shoulders and down her arms until the electricity left her fingertips in a chaotic mass. The lightning surged in a linear path from her limbs targeting the base of the earth dragon's now elongated neck, just a few meters in front of Fumiko. Luna's goal was to target the weak point, which was the spot of least mobility. By severing the earth dragon at the base of its neck it would no longer serve as a threat. And in the events of success she would exactly do that.

Lightning was the superior element in this scenario, finding the path of least resistance when making contact with the earth and effortlessly splitting the stone construct into pebbles. Given the superiority in firepower her technique would do just that and more. By breaking the base of the dragon Fumiko would lose control of her technique, the lightning even going a step further and trenching into the natural ground, tearing up the field and scorching the eath while doing so. And just as she planned, Luna's counter attack came effortlessly in her executed actions. Following her arced path Luna jointly raised both arms up combining her forward momentum and the motion of her arms to control her active technique. The column of electricity that was aimed to decimate the stone dragon raced over the woman's current standing location making a quick passing attack before the energy ceased from her fingertips.

Doing so followed the trend of tearing up and scorching the earth, however if Fumiko was unfortunate enough to remain in the technique's path, she would suffer a similar fate as her body would be briefly overloaded with the current. But when dealing with these advanced technique in a spar, minimal contact was often best. Assuming Luna completed her action without any interference she would turn to face Fumiko with the little air she had left before her feet planting in the face of a mighty Senju tree. Using chakra to keep herself seated firmly on its trunk she was only a few meters from the ground at this point. She would watch Fumiko to read her status. If she was struck that would be bad news, but not as bad as if she suddenly disappeared.

Luna almost had Fumiko in awe; however, she didn’t let herself get distracted enough not to make her next move. Fumiko was already prepared to take off, and during the time Luna was airborne, she had pushed off the ground into a sprint. Her plan was to get closer to Luna, until the static and crackle of Lightning emitted from the other Jounin’s fingers and severed the head of her Earth and Stone Dragon. It didn’t take long for Fumiko to assume she was the next target. As the streak of lightning decimated her dragon, then began its path of tearing and scorching the earth heading for her, Fumiko formed half of the tiger hand seal. She angled herself diagonally from where Luna projected herself and the path of the lightning. Fumiko performed the Body Flicker Technique, launching her lean frame in the straight, diagonal path away. The lightning that had been aimed at her just narrowly missed and singed the hem of her skirt. That was too close…

She came to a halt after about twenty meters when the jutsu finished. Fumiko spun around to face the direction she firmly believed her opponent was still. After such a close call her heart pounded in her chest, she could feel the pulsing in her ears. Her blue eyes scanned the area, taking note of the damage that the lightning damage had done to the ground and at the same time looking for her opponent. Once that Fumi saw that Luna was standing on one of the trees, just a few meters above the ground, she gestured towards the woman and large spears made of earth erupted from the ground. The rock pillar spears began about ten meters out from where Fumiko was, all aiming to pierce the tree where Luna stood. Some aimed for the bottoms of the tree, whereas most aimed for the middle.

Expecting another counter, Fumiko’s body tensed up, ready to react to whatever she would have to face. Even knowing that her opponent uses Raiton, Fumiko still attempted to stick with her Doton attacks. Whether it was out of habit or just personal preference - Fumi had a gut feeling that she would have to switch it up eventually. Especially after seeing how easily the lightning had broken apart her dragon. Her heart was still thumping hard against her rib cage, Fumiko drew in deep breaths and exhaled long and slow.

Luna noticed a single hand sign Fumiko performed single-handedly just a moment before the stream of electricity traveled over her body. The pinkette dashed at dangerously fast speeds, the woman vanishing from her peripherals the moment she left her direct eye sight. Luna wound up ending her technique a bit prematurely as Fumiko was no longer in targetable range. With the woman out of sight Luna needed to act quickly. As she descended towards her landing a hand reached around into her hip pouch while the other raised and held the seal of confrontation. Luna retrieved a single smoke bomb and exposed it just out of her pouch, hand still behind her back to minimize detonation time. The second both feet made contact with the tree's surface she squeezed the explosive and released a large plume of opaque gray smoke.

The Jounin created two additional copies of herself, one taking her place, while her and the other copy sprung out from the tree she currently occupied. The shadow clone in her previous place would accept its fate when run through with several earthen spikes, her senses too dull and feet too heavy to compete with the advanced earth technique. The clone would be strung up as a final gasp escaped its lips before popping into vapor and joining the smoke cloud. Luna and her clone split up, Luna passing through the canopy layer of the forest to stay further from the ground where Fumiko primarily used her Ninjutsu. The canopy provided cover by thick branches and tree leaves, and a generous twenty meter gap between herself and the earth.

The clone stayed trunk-level, a mere three to five meters from the earth as it moved between trees in no real pattern, zig-zagging but making her pursuit clear; she always moved forward towards Fumiko's location despite her random approach pattern. Fumiko was spotted, low-to-earth given her recent execution of an earth technique. Reaching to the holster strapped to her thigh Luna unbuttoned the cover with her thumb and hooked the ring of her kunai with her middle finger in one deft motion. A single twirl would adjust her grip as the blade now rested in her hand in a reverse grip. The clone dropped down from the safety of the trees onto the ground just a few meters in front of Fumiko, blade drawn, and ready to engage. While the actual Luna tracked their location she remained hidden for now while she would observe their fight for a moment to strike.

Defense was important when dealing with an armed opponent, especially when the blade was much bigger than the one she had. Keeping her eyes on her opponent the clone closed the space between them both and lunged forward. Keeping her profile low and moving at full speed she used her offhand to push the kunai forward from its ringed pommel while she used the arm she carried the blade with to guide her shot. Together her method would work to make a single, well-placed thrust to Fumiko's lower abdomen. The blade would be driven up to the hilt causing a girthy wound given the kunai's naturally stout frame. As quick as she struck her target she would back out in a skip taking her blade with her to leave Fumiko with an open wound. Keeping her feet light and senses keen the clone would remain aware of every observable action the pinkette made.

Fumiko stood up from her crouched position and braced herself. She was unsure of what Luna’s plan was, but she had to be ready for the next attack. She reached back into her pack and pulled out her katana, Rebirth. Gripping the hilt with both hands, Fumiko breathed in deep. Her muscles were tense, scanning the area in case Luna was able to evade the spikes.

A flash of light in the distance caught Fumiko’s eyes, and she took a step back. Clang! The blade of Luna’s kunai clashed into the blade of Rebirth. Fumiko smiled at Luna, not quite noticing anything off with the woman before her. She’d twist the handle of the blade then thrust her opponent back. With her knees bent, she jumped back about four meters away - putting some space between the two.

Without the need for hand seals, Fumiko would smirk at Luna, her purple blade still pointing at her opponent. Without much warning, the ground just ahead of Fumiko began to liquify for a full five meter stretch. If successful, the murky fluid would cart her opponent even further away.

If she could play the keep-away game, it was possible to exhaust her elder Jonin. However, she was not counting on anything to be concrete and raised her blade into a ready position.

Grass Whistle Empty Re: Grass Whistle

Post by Luna Yamamoto Tue Mar 09, 2021 11:40 pm

Luna's eyes locked on her training partner as the clone rapidly closed the gap. She knew it was a bad idea to engage in close quarters initially, but given the situation of the woman's Ninjutsu ability she had to plan a more strategic approach. When Fumiko noticed the woman's approach she reached for the sword she kept stashed away, as expected. Luna was ready to move, watching the motion Fumiko's arm as the blade was drawn. The pinkette swiped her blade in a half-arc which triggered the clone to react by ducking and weaving to the outside the sword, but the moment she would start to close in, Fumiko started to move back as well. Given the speed disparity between the two ninja she was outmatched again as the prize was set further from her. Luna's opponent kept the blade drawn and utilized its length for a defensive measure by holding it at full length.

Distractions were necessary in these moments, which was why many ninja carried tools. Luna's clone was hot in her pursuit to follow Fumiko, though the mud river would catch her by surprise given her intense focus on Fumiko. Although the mud river wasn't particularly harmful, pulling the ground from beneath her before pushing her away in a stream of mush, it was the vulnerability caused by tumbling in a constant hosing of the slurry which robbed the victim of any sense of control or action until she regained their footing. This was Luna's time to jump in. Reaching into her hip pouch she slung a single kunai rigged with an explosive tag, the paper burning the moment it left her hand whizzing through the air. The blade would sink into the grass just a foot behind Fumiko and detonate immediately as it did. The clone, who was swept by the mud river, would tumble and find its footing to stand back on her two feet again, though dredged in the mess created by Fumiko.

The explosive tag was used as an attempt to force Fumiko out of the area to keep the clone alive while displacing any follow up projectiles or Ninjutsu she would use while Luna's clone was left vulnurable. Luna herself would continue to stalk Fumiko in the canopy layer of the training ground, hopping between the branches present and positioning herself directly above Fumiko.

Grass Whistle Empty Re: Grass Whistle

Fumiko sighed out, as the marsh pushed Luna away. She’d glance around, not knowing what to expect, but she didn’t want to turn and run just yet. First of all, that was a cowardly tactic, but she did not want to get hurt or hurt her fellow kunoichi. This was training, and she should be giving it her all - just as she would out on the battlefield. However, Fumiko always struggled with the ruthlessness when it came to her fellow shinobi of Konoha.

She kept Rebirth up, in case Luna escaped from the river of Earth. What she was not expecting was a glint of metal whizzing through the air, then the blast from the explosion tag. The force of the explosion knocked Fumiko forward, which made the pink-haired woman stumble. She tucked in and rolled away from where she now saw a kunai sticking up and out of the ground.

Fumiko glanced around, she decided to sheath her katana and put it back into her backpack. Something was off, the angle of the kunai in the ground did not make sense for the Luna that was carted away. Fumiko backed into the shadows of the trees, holding up the Tiger hand seal. Slowly, she disappeared from sight. Planning on finding her opponent from the shadows.

Luna witnessed her opponent suffer from the blast of the explosive tag, but there was no doubt she was able to endure the damage dealt. While the explosives were indeed dangerous they were less of a dead end and more of an inconvenience as a ninja's body grew stronger. But it served its purpose as the Shadow Clone had plenty of time to stand up and become less of a sitting duck. But it was after the clone gained its composure did it see Fumiko face. A face whose eyes were drawn to the placement of the blade, and it was that gesture which made Luna realize what was going on. What Luna could ascertain was that her opponent was well aware of the blade's origin, which was not hard to come to the conclusion that there was more than one Luna on the set. And while Luna expected her opponent to figure out eventually, her reaction to it was a miscalculation on her end which prohibited her from following up.

Very elusive and calculative. It was challenging to deal with her kind, since she needed to trap her first before combat. Any direct method of fighting would be met with a swift counter attack, and given Fumi's speed advantage she could stay out of range with little effort. And speaking of counter attack, it seemed she was on the move. Fumiko vanished from plain sight as she utilized her shadow technique. Luna, who was very perspective on her own, noticed the woman's body blend into the rest of the forever. Initially it would appear as disappearing given the technique's functionality, but its weakness was its dependence on preexisting shadows. The clone, having just recovered from her mud bath, wiped the residue dirt from her mouth and flicked it to the ground with a solid whip of her wrist.

"It's times like these I'm a little envious of Fire nature users. But I learned to make do with what I have." She shouted into the woods drawing attention to herself. Six hand seals would follow before she heaved her bosom back in a great inhale before opening her mouth. From her insides she unleashed a narrow stream of water, and while it covered little area, Fumiko would be able to analyze its intent. The stream would punch through the trees and even pulverize any boulders in the area as it reached its maximum length of one-hundred meters. Sweeping the torrent of water she'd effortlessly hedge down dozens of trees in her point of view. Fumiko would be threatened by this moving blade of water if she remained head-level, and while it was effortless to dodge given her experience, her real purpose would make itself apparent as trees began to collapse one after another as a reasonably large section of the woods began to topple. It would be a hazardous environment for Fumiko while also eliminating shadows in the area by exposing her to sunlight.

Luna within the trees will stay vigilant, safe as she can be since she is placed above the clone.

Keeping her snickers to herself at the sight of a mud covered Luna, even if it is just a clone. She had to move swiftly and silently to not give her position in the shadows away. She focused some chakra to her feet and raced up into the branches of a near by tree, keeping herself in the shade the tree naturally provided. She heard Luna shout out her envious feelings about shinobi who have fire nature chakra, That would be too easy, she thought.

She lept from tree to tree as they began to fall. In a hurry to stay within the shadows of the branches. With the Luna clone taking out as many trees as she was, it was dangerous for Fumiko up above and down on the ground. The pink haired woman jumped down from the trees and placed her palms on the ground. Activating another Doton-based jutsu. She was not paying attention to the fact she was no longer in the shadows - in plain view.

The earth beneath the Luna clone began to swirl in on itself. Crumbling inward, forming a whirlpool of dirt. If it was successful, the clone would disperse because it would crushed by the churning earth. Fumiko would rise from her crouched position, her next step being carefully calculated. Noticing she gave away her position, she’d curse at herself before turning to run into the trees that remained standing.

The real Luna was hiding somewhere nearby, of that she was sure. Perhaps somewhere above or below? Considering the blue haired woman had only attacked with ration and suiton, she could guarantee that she didn’t have access to any subterranean techniques like Fumiko had. So she must be up in the air. Bending down into a crouch, Fumiko launched herself back into the tree tops. Chakra being channeled into her feet to maintain her balance.
